Queer as Folk 30 Day Challenge
Day 20 — Your favourite and least favourite ships (that didn’t happen)

Brian and Leda (Favourite ship that didn’t happen)

I kind of shipped it ever since the ‘Anti-Christ’ introduction. It wouldn’t happen, but I can’t help but imagine it. I think the writers definitely wanted to convey Leda as a female Brian. She’s sarcastic, headstrong and against any kind of commitment. And for the tiny moments that we were shown, there was some serious flirting going on. Kinneycutt would have been my answer but let’s be honest this did happen at some point.

Brian and Michael (Least Favourite ship that didn’t happen)

I hate the idea of this ship ever happening, and I am ever so thankful that Cowlip didn’t follow through on this storyline with their adaption. Imagine what a train wreck it would have been. Seeing as I am not a supporter of their friendship, I can’t even comprehend it becoming more. I don’t understand shipping them because Brian never had genuine romantic feelings towards Michael, and Michael’s love for Brian was unhealthily fanatical. If Brian became possessive over Michael at any point during the show, e.g. During the David era, it wasn’t jealously in the sense that he wanted a relationship with Michael, but that he couldn’t deal with the lack of attention. Brian is very calculating person, and the affection he sometimes showed Michael only ensured that he’d always have someone there, praising him. Other than that, it’s when he’s in pain e.g. over his father dying, or Justin leaving, and he’s looking for love in a place he’s certain is there. Anyway, more of that on Day 22.

Day 19 — A QAF character that is most like you and/or which character would you date?

  • I can identify with most of the characters at certain points, but if I had to narrow it down I’d say Melanie. I can pretty opinionated at times, and whenever Mel is arguing with someone, I usually understand where she’s coming from.
  • I would definitely date Ben. One of my best friends and I always talk about how perfect Ben is. He’s kind, intelligent and selfless.

Day 18 — Your least favourite female character

Joan Kinney

Joan is an accurate depiction of everything I hate in this world. She is a person who uses her beliefs to discriminate against others, places her religion above her family members, and allows her extreme views to guide her entire existence. She is willing to believe the absolute worst in her son, and to say the most hurtful things, all because of one small part of his identity.

Day 17- Your least favourite male character
Michael Novotny

Michael is the only major character within the show that I harbour mostly negative feelings for. When I first watched the series, I thought Michael became intolerable more towards the last 2 seasons. But when I re-watched it I realised the hypocrisy of his character, and his victim-playing, occurred from the beginning. However, I don’t know if the writers intended Michael to be perceived this way, considering the copious amount of times he is referred to as being the loyal friend, or the one with the big heart. I believe they intended him to be the most likable of the group, the central character, which is probably why he narrated in early season 1. He’s like a really whiney, obnoxious Carrie Bradshaw. Anyway, that’s one of the main reasons I dislike him so much, is that he’s practically sainted by his friends, when he’s actions completely contradict their praising. Actually, I think Brian said it best: “no one plays dewy-eyed innocent better than you.” Whenever Michael does something that goes against his positive depiction, it’s ignored. For example, in 3.01 no one even considers Brian’s actions may have a valid reason, because who would hit poor, adorable Michael? It frustrates me to no end.

Michael’s immaturity is an additional factor for why he is my least favourite character. His comic book obsession takes way too much up of the show’s time, to be honest. It actually takes up too much of his character too. It’s like his key quality sometimes, which is just silly to me. I think his immaturity stems mostly from his inability to grow up from his teenage years and his fascination with Brian, but I’ll get into that more on Day 22.

All in all, I understand no character in the show is flawless. They all have aspects that might make them unlikable at certain points, but Michael’s faults span over the entire show for me, and by season 5 I can barely stand watching him. (This might also have to do with Hal Sparks’ incapability to act well in even the simplest of scenes).

Day 15 — Write a 200-500 word quick-fic from the point of view of any character.

Brian opens the back door, the outside of his house greets him with an overriding sense of calm; the cool wind flutters against his black suit jacket and he resists the urge to stretch out his arms as widely as possible. The neighbourhood he grew up in seems quieter now, occupied more by single people and young couples, rather than families with children. It’s for the best, he thinks bitterly. With his stained fingers he lights a cigarette, but the strong smell reminds him of other things he doesn’t want to think of.  At 17 Brian came home stinking of vodka and cigarettes, and as he emptied his upset stomach on the ground, with his fingers digging into the dirt, he felt his father grab at the back of his neck. His dad’s eyes were unfocused, his head moved obscenely with every word, and he winced as his father spat demands in his face, claims of family money being hidden from him, and regrets about being a family man. And finally the foreseeable black and blue that painted Brian’s face; a semblance of pain and rage from his father, and the thought passes that those feelings were transferred from his father’s fist to Brian’s mind.

Finally the cigarette burns out, and unfamiliar guests leave, and Brian retreats to the jeep before his sister starts crying again and his mother passes out, and as his looks in the rear view mirror at the hazel eyes that don’t match anyone’s in his family, he tells himself that these ties will be easier to cut than ever.

Queer as Folk 30 Day Challenge
Day 13 — Your least favourite pairing
Justin/Ethan

I was thinking about this for a while, and I really was planning on doing David/Michael. Mostly for the fact I don’t see the point to their relationship. It didn’t cause Michael to grow in anyway, they had little chemistry as a couple, and it seemed like most of the time they were disagreeing. But I didn’t choose them after all simply because I didn’t care enough. I was indifferent to them from the time they met to the time they broke up. When it comes to Justin and Ethan, particularly at the end of season 2, they really got under my skin. I know it needed to happen. I know Justin needed to explore a different type of relationship. But knowing that never made me enjoy their scenes together. From the moment Ethan opened his mouth, I found him unlikeable. Like, he was and will forever be ridiculous to me. He’s so dramatic and egotistical. This doesn’t make him a bad person; I just find those qualities unappealing. And I do believe he thought he was good for Justin. As if he was saving him from this idea Justin created of Brian Kinney.

However, I never believed Ethan had genuine feelings for Justin. He saws Justin as a cute, talented guy that he could show off to his friends. If he hadn’t met Justin that day, he would have met someone else. The same goes for Justin. Ethan is the reverse of what he was used to. He was traditional; he was open and acted as though he’d die without Justin as his boyfriend. It’s not hard to see the appeal, especially when looking at the state of Brian and Justin’s relationship at the time. However, It would have been as easy as Brian asking him to stay, and Ethan would have been out of the picture.

It wasn’t so much Ethan that Justin liked, it was the romantic gestures that he offered, e.g. re-enacting the picnic on the floor, instead trying to do it with Brian. Justin still preferred Brian, he just couldn’t force him to act a certain way, so he went with Ethan.

As for the ‘cute’ side of the relationship; I never saw it as sweet, as I did nauseating. Not to be harsh, it was just odd to see Justin in these over the top situations. And Ethan’s dialogue is incredibly cringe-worthy most of the time.

When Ethan cheated, it wasn’t that surprising. How could it be? He and Justin got together so quickly, and Ethan was feeding him cheesy sentiments from the time they met. His ‘passion’ for Justin was a well constructed act, and I’m sure he used all his lines on the guy he cheated with.

But in the end, the growth caused from their relationship leads me to see it as a positive. Justin matured, and it resulted in a more equal relationship for him and Brian. Still, Ethan and Justin exclusively as couple don’t appeal to me in any way.
